What Is Deep Cleaning — and Why Does It Matter?

Deep cleaning goes far beyond regular surface tidying. It targets the areas that routine cleaning overlooks: inside appliances, behind furniture, inside drawers, grout lines, ceiling fans, and more. A thorough deep clean removes built-up grime, allergens, bacteria, and odours — leaving your home genuinely hygienic, not just visually tidy.

Most homes benefit from a deep clean at least twice a year — typically in spring and late autumn. It's also essential when moving into or out of a property, or after renovation work.

What You'll Need

  • Microfibre cloths (multiple)
  • All-purpose cleaner and degreaser
  • Bathroom cleaner and toilet bowl cleaner
  • Baking soda and white vinegar (natural alternatives)
  • Scrubbing brushes of varying sizes
  • Vacuum cleaner with attachments
  • Mop and bucket
  • Rubber gloves and, if using strong chemicals, a face mask
  • Step ladder for high areas

Room-by-Room Deep Cleaning Plan

1. Bedrooms

  1. Strip and wash all bedding, including pillows, duvets, and mattress protectors.
  2. Vacuum and flip the mattress. Sprinkle baking soda, leave for 30 minutes, then vacuum off.
  3. Dust ceiling fan blades, light fittings, and top of wardrobes.
  4. Wipe down all furniture surfaces including bedside tables, dressers, and mirror frames.
  5. Clean inside drawers and wardrobes — remove items, wipe surfaces, replace.
  6. Vacuum the entire floor including under the bed and behind furniture.

2. Living Room

  1. Dust and clean all light fittings, ceiling fans, and cornices.
  2. Wipe down all shelving and remove, clean, and replace all decorative items.
  3. Deep vacuum sofas and chairs — use the crevice tool to reach between cushions.
  4. Clean TV screens with a dry microfibre cloth. Wipe down all electronics and cables.
  5. Wash curtains or wipe down blinds.
  6. Vacuum, then steam mop or shampoo carpets.

3. Kitchen

  1. Empty and clean inside the refrigerator, including shelves and door seals.
  2. Self-clean or manually clean the oven; soak and scrub oven racks separately.
  3. Degrease range hood and soak filters in hot soapy water.
  4. Wipe down all cabinet interiors and exteriors.
  5. Descale the kettle and clean inside the dishwasher with a dishwasher cleaner.
  6. Scrub the sink, including the drain and tap base.
  7. Mop floor thoroughly, including under appliances where possible.

4. Bathrooms

  1. Remove and wash shower curtains and bath mats.
  2. Scrub grout lines with a dedicated grout cleaner or a baking soda paste.
  3. Descale showerheads by soaking in white vinegar.
  4. Clean inside bathroom cabinets and medicine boxes.
  5. Disinfect all surfaces including the toilet base, cistern, and behind the toilet.
  6. Re-caulk where sealant has discoloured or cracked, if necessary.

Finishing Touches

  • Replace air fresheners or set out natural odour absorbers like activated charcoal.
  • Wipe down all light switches and power points throughout the home.
  • Clean all interior windows and window tracks.
  • Vacuum and mop all hallways and entryways last.

How Long Does a Deep Clean Take?

For an average 3-bedroom home, a thorough deep clean typically takes between 6–10 hours for one person, or 3–5 hours for a team of two. If you'd prefer to leave it to the professionals, a trained cleaning team will complete the job efficiently with commercial-grade equipment and products.
